What is a Registered Massage Therapist?
A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is someone who has been
trained to assess and treat individual soft tissue and musculoskeletal
dysfunctions. RMTs are trained to use active and passive techniques to help
restore function, decrease pain and other symptoms, increase mobility and
flexibility, as well as educate clients on safe and effective home care
routines.
Registered Massage Therapists in BC are required to study at one of the private colleges accredited by the College of Massage Therapy of BC. The RMT program our RMTs attended was a 3000-hour competency-based program, set out to educate prospective RMTs in both the scientific and clinical/technical aspect of being a health professional.
The Registered Massage Therapy program covers in-depth study of human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy, clinical research methods, as well as business and jurisprudence training. After successful graduation from the Registered Massage Therapy program, graduates are required to take a set of written Registration Exams. Upon successful completion of these written exams, graduates are called back to a practical exam over seen by a panel of examiners approved by the College of Massage Therapy.
Throughout an RMTs career, it is mandatory that each Registered Massage Therapist take part in Continuing Education Courses approved by the CMTBC to further increase their knowledge in techniques and new information (research).
In Prince George and the rest of British Columbia, Registered Massage Therapy is regulated and governed by the College of Massage Therapist of BC following the guidelines of the Health Professions Act. The regulation of the profession by the CMTBC provides safety and protection to the public as well as ensures that the quality of Massage Therapy provided in this province remains at the highest standard.
